PLAY ON A TEAM
The Westport Team participates in the FairWest Public School League. Only students in grades 6, 7 or 8 at Coleytown or Bedford Middle Schools will be able to join the team. Matches are meant to be enjoyable. The Middle School program is for all levels and some children will be playing for the first time this season. It’s important for everyone to enjoy practice sessions and feel comfortable on the court. When your child is ready to compete, they’re welcome to join the team.
Rosters:
There will be up to three middle school teams – A, B and C. The coaches will create rosters based on skill level. Spaces can be limited at match events. If your child doesn’t get to play we will aim to give them the opportunity next time.
Uniforms:
A notification will be sent when the online uniform shop opens. The only required items are the t-shirt and shorts, other items are entirely optional. If you have a uniform from last year that still fits, there is no need to buy a new one. Uniforms must be worn at all matches.
Referee Tutorial:
To help players become familiar with the refereeing process, a tutorial session is scheduled at the start of the main season, check the calendar for the scheduled date. All players should attend as everyone will be expected to referee at some point. Understanding the rules of squash, and how to score, is critical. US Squash offers a referee exam which can be taken through the US Squash website. This is a requirement for any tournament players but incredibly valuable for anyone participating in match play. Don’t worry, it starts with the basics and, as the kids age up, they take the next level exam.
US Squash / ClubLocker Membership:
The FairWest league requires that match players be US Squash members. A free account is fine. (Paid accounts are ONLY necessary if your child plans to play individual US Squash accredited tournaments.) Go to US Squash and click on Create Account. Once a member, and after your child begins to compete, they will start to build a squash rating and ranking.
